Is the Ford Transit reliable?

Yes. The Ford Transit has a strong reputation for reliability and is one of the most trusted vans in the UK. With proper servicing and maintenance, a Transit can comfortably cover 200,000+ miles. It is widely used by tradespeople and businesses who depend on it daily.

How much does a used Ford Transit cost?

Right now there are 286 used Ford Transit vans for sale on Only Vans UK covering 2002 to 2025 models. Prices range from £1,200 to £34,990, with a typical (median) asking price of £14,000. Age, mileage, wheelbase and specification make the biggest difference to price.

What is the difference between the Transit and Transit Custom?

The Ford Transit is the full-size large van, offering maximum load capacity and available in multiple roof heights and wheelbases. The Ford Transit Custom is a mid-size van — smaller, more manoeuvrable, and better suited to urban use. The Transit Custom is one of the UK's best-selling vans in its own right.

Which Ford Transit is best for business?

It depends on your needs. The Transit Custom is ideal for tradespeople and urban deliveries thanks to its compact size and practical load area. The full-size Transit suits those needing maximum cargo space — builders, couriers, and logistics operators. The Transit Connect works well for light-duty city use.

What should I check when buying a used Ford Transit?

Key checks include: service history, timing belt/chain condition, rust on the chassis and sills, EGR valve and DPF condition (common issues on diesel models), gearbox smoothness, and any warning lights. Always request a full vehicle history check before purchasing.

Is the Ford E-Transit worth buying?

The Ford E-Transit is a strong option for businesses operating in urban areas or with predictable daily routes. It offers a range of up to 196 miles (WLTP) and benefits from lower running costs and zero-emission zones access. It is best suited to fleets or businesses with charging infrastructure in place.

Are all Ford Transits ULEZ compliant?

All models registered from September 2016 with the 2.0 EcoBlue Euro 6 diesel engine are ULEZ-compliant. Check each listing on Only Vans UK for the green 'ULEZ' label.

What is the towing capacity of a Ford Transit?

Depending on configuration, the Ford Transit can tow between 2,800 and 3,500 kilograms, making it one of the strongest choices in its class.

Can I sell my Ford Transit on Only Vans UK?

Absolutely. You can list your van for free in minutes and reach thousands of buyers every week.

The van that does everything

Overall Rating

5/5

4/5

This is my third Transit and I wouldn't buy anything else. Done 112k miles in five years and it's still going strong. The 2.0 EcoBlue engine is fantastic - powerful and economical. Getting about 38 MPG which is impressive for a big van. Load space is massive, can fit anything in there. Parts are cheap and every garage can work on them. Drives well, comfortable enough for long journeys. It's the default choice for a reason - they just work.

What I liked

Extremely reliable, excellent fuel economy, huge load space, cheap parts, easy to service anywhere, comfortable

Could be improved

Interior is functional rather than fancy, some road noise, basic spec on lower models

Reliable and economical

Been using this Transit for removals for three years. It's been really reliable - only had to replace brake pads and tyres so far. The engine has plenty of power even when fully loaded. Fuel economy is good, usually get 35-40 MPG depending on how heavy the load is. The high roof version means we can stack furniture properly. Resale values are strong which is reassuring. Would definitely recommend.

Reliable, good fuel economy, powerful engine, strong resale value, spacious, affordable maintenance

Suspension is quite firm when empty, wind noise on motorways, basic interior trim

Modern Transit is brilliant

The newer Transits are so much better than the old ones. This one has all the modern tech - reversing camera, parking sensors, cruise control. Makes life so much easier. The SYNC 3 system works well with Apple CarPlay. Engine is smooth and quiet. Handling is surprisingly good for such a big van. Load space is excellent with the LWB model. Running costs are reasonable. Very impressed overall.

Modern technology, smooth engine, good handling, spacious, reliable, strong resale value

Optional extras add up quickly, fuel economy drops when fully loaded, firm ride

DPF headache on my Ford Transit

3/5

I’ve run a Ford Transit on site work for years. Solid van overall, carries the gear no problem, but the DPF is a nightmare if you’re not doing long runs. Mine started giving me the DPF light at about 100k miles. Around town it clogs up quick – you lose power, it drinks more diesel, and it feels like you’re pulling a trailer when you’re not. Had it cleaned once, cost me a fair bit, and a year later the same issue came back. On the motorway it clears itself better, but for builders like me who are in and out of jobs local, it’s a pain. Other than the DPF problem, the Transit’s decent – comfy cab, loads of room in the back, cheap enough for parts. But if you’re buying one used, I’d check the history and see if the DPF’s been sorted, or budget for it.

Good load space, easy to drive, plenty of spares around.

Ford should fix the DPF issues – it lets the van down for lads using it on local jobs.

Great base for camper conversions

I convert vans into campervans and the Transit is one of my favourites to work with. The L3H3 model gives you loads of height and length to play with. The body panels are easy to work with and there's good aftermarket support for parts. It's been reliable mechanically - 67,000 miles and only routine maintenance needed. The 2.0 EcoBlue engine is strong enough even when fully loaded after conversion. Fuel economy isn't amazing at around 32-34 MPG but that's expected for a big van. Build quality is solid. The only thing is it can feel a bit agricultural compared to a Sprinter, but you're paying a lot less. For conversion work, you can't go wrong with a Transit.

Excellent space for conversions, reliable mechanically, strong engine, good aftermarket support, holds value well, easier on the wallet than rivals

Fuel economy could be better, feels less refined than premium rivals, quite basic inside, wind noise at speed
