Injectors have cost me more than the van did
Bought an ex British Gas 1.6 TDI 102 cheap, thinking VW build quality with a Golf underneath, cant go far wrong. The van itself is lovely to drive, it genuinely does drive like a taller Golf, and its been comfortable enough for long days. But the 1.6 injectors are a disaster. Number one went first - hard starting, misfire, limp mode - £700 to have that one done. Then within the year another two let go. Ive now spent north of £3000 on injectors on a van that cost me less than that to buy. Everyone on the forums says the same thing, if one goes the rest will follow so get all four done at once. Mines also had the emissions fix which people reckon makes the regens more frequent and kills the EGR, and sure enough the EGR went too, £850 with the software update afterwards. Economy is decent at 43 mpg and the resale holds up far better than it deserves to. Would i have another Caddy? Yes. But the 2.0, not the 1.6.
What I liked
Drives like a taller Golf, genuinely good build quality and refinement, comfortable cab, around 43 mpg, holds its value very well for a small van
Could be improved
The 1.6 TDI piezo injectors fail one after another, over £3000 spent on injectors alone, EGR failure at £850 including the software update, the emissions fix seems to make regens worse, payload is poor at around 600kg

Best built small van out there, shame about payload
Been running a Caddy Cargo 2.0 TDI 102 for the business for a couple of years now and nothing has gone wrong, not one single thing. Which matches what you read - the Caddy always comes out as top small van in those fleet reliability surveys. Ride quality is excellent on the new coil sprung rear axle, much better than the old shape, and the gearbox is lovely to use. Getting high 40s on a run and low 40s round town, so nowhere near the 57 on the sticker but decent enough. Two proper gripes though. Payload is only about 650kg which is well short of a Connect or a Berlingo at a tonne, and if your carrying anything heavy that really matters. And whoever decided to put the climate control on touch panels wants a word with themselves - theres a lag and you cant use them properly without looking down at them. Bring back buttons. Still quite loud inside as well, the doors sound a bit tinny when you shut them. It holds its money brilliantly though which takes the sting out of the price.
What I liked
Nothing has gone wrong in 38k, consistently the top small van for reliability, excellent ride on the coil sprung rear axle, slick gearbox, holds its value brilliantly
Could be improved
Payload only around 650kg against a tonne for rivals, touch sensitive climate controls are laggy and awful to use on the move, still noisy inside, tinny sounding doors, expensive to buy

About the Volkswagen Caddy
History
The Volkswagen Caddy was first introduced in 1978 as a small pickup truck based on the Golf platform. It evolved into a compact van in the 1990s and has since become one of the most popular compact vans in Europe. The Caddy combines car-like driving dynamics with practical load space, making it ideal for small businesses and urban delivery services. Over the generations, the Caddy has maintained Volkswagen's reputation for quality and reliability in a smaller package.
